Turmeric & Curcumin: Human Evidence, Joint Pain & Safety

1 min read

Turmeric is a food spice, while curcumin is one of its major compounds and is often sold in concentrated supplements. Those are related products, but they are not interchangeable.

Quick answer

Randomized-trial reviews suggest turmeric extracts or curcumin may improve pain and function in some people with osteoarthritis. That does not make turmeric a cure for arthritis, and the evidence for one condition should not be stretched into claims for every inflammatory disease.

What human studies show

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials involving more than 1,600 participants found improvements in osteoarthritis pain and function compared with placebo. Formulations, doses, and study quality varied, so the results do not establish one universal product or dose.

The safety issue people miss

Most trials report few serious adverse effects, but rare cases of clinically apparent liver injury have been linked to turmeric or curcuminoid supplements. In 2026, a United States Pharmacopeia review recommended a liver-warning statement for turmeric and curcuminoid monographs. Food use is not the same exposure as a high-bioavailability supplement.

Before you buy a supplement

If you have liver disease, take multiple medicines, use anticoagulants, are preparing for surgery, or develop dark urine, jaundice, or persistent abdominal symptoms after starting a supplement, speak with a healthcare professional. Product formulation and testing matter.
