Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata): Anxiety, Sleep Evidence & Safety
Passionflower is another herb that gets marketed with more confidence than the evidence deserves. There is some human research for anxiety and sleep, but the overall evidence base is still small.
Quick answer
NCCIH says a small amount of research suggests oral passionflower might reduce some anxiety symptoms and may improve total sleep time in adults with insomnia. Conclusions are not definite, and results for falling asleep and staying asleep are mixed.
Evidence strength
Norene’s Farmacy rating: LIMITED / EARLY HUMAN EVIDENCE for anxiety and insomnia.
Safety
Passionflower may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or confusion. It can interact with medications used around anesthesia and may intensify nervous-system slowing. NCCIH advises against use during pregnancy because of concern about uterine contractions.
What we do not claim
We do not claim that passionflower treats an anxiety disorder, cures insomnia, or replaces psychotherapy, CBT-I, medication, or medical evaluation.
