Panax Ginseng: Sexual Function, Blood Sugar Evidence & Safety
Panax ginseng, also called Asian ginseng, is one of the better-studied herbs in supplements, but the evidence depends heavily on the outcome.
What the evidence says
NCCIH reports that some research suggests oral Asian ginseng may improve aspects of sexual function in people with erectile dysfunction. Research on blood-sugar control is conflicting and inconclusive.
Evidence strength
Sexual function: LIMITED HUMAN EVIDENCE. Blood sugar: MIXED / INCONCLUSIVE HUMAN EVIDENCE.
Safety
Insomnia is a common side effect. Ginseng may lower blood sugar, affect blood clotting, worsen autoimmune conditions, and interact with medications. Pregnancy safety is uncertain.
