Digestive Disorders: Peppermint Oil, IBS Evidence & Safety
Digestive Disorders covers many different conditions, so the evidence has to stay tied to the specific problem being studied. Peppermint is a good example: the strongest evidence is for certain enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules in IBS, not for every mint product.
Quick answer
NCCIH reports that enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules may modestly reduce overall IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, and gas, over the short term. Long-term effectiveness has not been established.
Evidence strength
Norene’s Farmacy rating for enteric-coated peppermint oil and short-term IBS symptoms: HUMAN CLINICAL EVIDENCE, LOW-QUALITY TO MODERATE SUPPORT DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME.
Safety
Peppermint oil can worsen reflux or heartburn, especially in non-enteric-coated forms. Essential oil is highly concentrated and should not be treated like peppermint tea.
What we do not claim
We do not claim that peppermint cures IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, GERD, ulcers, or other digestive diseases.
